Jackie Kay - Nottingham Waterstones

Jackie Kay and her support provided the perfect tonic to end a day when I'd scratched my new car on a low brick wall. They were funny, touching, moving, sincere, self-effacing and just great entertainment. I lived pretty close to Jackie Kay at one point in my life but we never met. Surprising really, we were only one stop apart on the main Glasgow-Edinburgh railway line.

Brilliant insightful performance

Jackie is a wonderful observer of life - this is the second time I have heard her perform live & she is an inspiration. Humour and wry observation coupled with thoughtfulness & sensitivity. Just amazing - thank you

Thought provoking evening

It is always worth going to hear Jackie Kay. Her warmth, humour and immediacy are unique and you walk away feeling joyful. There were poems I had not heard before, some of them using dialect words which were difficult to understand for a Midlander, but as she said with a wry smile “life's tough, get over it”. The warm up act, Milla Tebbs, was a real bonus. Her honesty was poignant and brave. I am sure we will hear more of her. I found the Poetry Festival website problematic: a calendar of events, dates and locations would have been much easier and why did I have to pay 3 separate booking fees for 3 tickets? However, that aside, I feel privileged to live in a city that promotes and invests in culture.

Lively and humane

This event was extremely well attended with anticipation evident. The opening section from the poet Mitta Tebbs was well received and poignant. Jackie Kay fulfilled all expectations in being humane and witty, personal and all-embracing. She is a very natural and warm communicator. A beautiful evening which I was so glad not to have missed.
